The Big Brother franchise is no stranger to controversy, but few twists have ignited as much debate as the \u201cHamster Wheel\u201d challenge from season 27\u2019s White Locust twist.<\/p>\n
For executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan, the idea to adapt the high-stakes competition from the holiday spinoff Big Brother: Reindeer Games to the main series seemed like a no-brainer. But they never expected the fierce backlash that followed \u2014 especially after fan-favorite Rachel Reilly was eliminated without a vote.<\/p>\n
Originally introduced in Reindeer Games, the hamster wheel maze came with a brutal twist: the first player had five minutes and 30 seconds to finish. Each subsequent competitor had one minute less, until someone failed and was instantly eliminated.<\/p>\n

The moment became a viral highlight and even fueled tension that later resurfaced on The Traitors.<\/p>\n So when producers brought the concept to Big Brother proper, they knew it would deliver drama. What they didn\u2019t anticipate was the fury when it led to Rachel\u2019s eviction without any vote or veto \u2014 a first for the flagship series.<\/p>\n Fans accused the twist of being unfair and purely physical. Grodner, however, insists that strategy and social gameplay were still crucial.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s off-base,\u201d<\/em> Grodner tells Entertainment Weekly. \u201cThere absolutely was a social element. Not everyone was going to go into that wheel \u2014 your relationships, alliances, and how you jockeyed for position in those ten minutes mattered.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n She points to Ashley, the eventual winner, as proof.<\/p>\n \u201cAshley was in the same alliance as Rachel, but no one pushed for her to enter the wheel. That\u2019s social strategy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Meehan agrees, emphasizing that the twist wasn\u2019t designed as a simple athletic challenge.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was built to be social and strategic as well as competitive,\u201d he says.<\/em><\/p>\n Meehan argues that removing the risk would have undermined what made the hamster wheel special.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople loved it on Reindeer Games because of the stakes. If we watered it down for Big Brother, it would lose its impact.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n He explains that the White Locust week still mirrored a standard Big Brother cycle \u2014 just in a different order.<\/p>\n \u201cYou had an initial challenge like an HOH to save yourself, and if you ended up in the wheel, that was like a Veto. The difference was, you had to make your social and strategic moves before the competition instead of after.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Grodner calls it \u201ca mis-ordered week,\u201d but maintains it was fair.<\/p>\n \u201cEveryone went in with the same rules,\u201d<\/em> Meehan adds. \u201cFairness is everyone playing by the same rules.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Of course, producers were as devastated as fans to lose Rachel \u2014 a Big Brother legend who had gone 60 days without ever touching the block.<\/p>\n \u201cNo one wanted her to leave that night,\u201d<\/em> Grodner says. \u201cBut the way she went out actually shows how social the twist was. In her mind, getting on that wheel was the strategic move \u2014 but she could have avoided it. Her own ally put her there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Ashley and Will, by contrast, avoided even mentioning the wheel.<\/p>\n \u201cAshley won the game,\u201d<\/em> Meehan notes. \u201cShe made sure she\u2019d never be picked for that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The White Locust twist was pre-planned long before the cast \u2014 including Rachel \u2014 was finalized.<\/p>\n \u201cWe design all the creative before the season starts,\u201d<\/em> Meehan explains. \u201cWe don\u2019t alter the game to protect certain players. You set it up, and then you let them play.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Even with the intense backlash \u2014 Grodner says she received death threats \u2014 the producers see the uproar as a sign of the show\u2019s enduring power.<\/p>\n \u201cIn season 27, if fans are that invested, that\u2019s success,\u201d<\/em> Meehan says.<\/p>\n Grodner agrees:<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t produce from fear. Losing a big player hurts, but that unpredictability \u2014 that\u2019s what makes Big Brother great.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n After all the chaos, would they ever risk bringing it back? Grodner laughs at the idea.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a great hour of TV.
