Veteran Actor Pete Edochie Explains Why Igbos Struggle in Nigerian Politics

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has shed light on why many Igbos struggle to make significant progress in Nigerian politics. In a recent interview with Afia TV, Edochie attributed this challenge to the Igbo tendency to reject betrayal and treachery.

Edochie explained that Igbo politicians often sever ties with individuals who deceive or betray them, a reaction deeply rooted in Igbo culture, which values loyalty and trust. According to him, this strong adherence to loyalty makes it difficult for many Igbo politicians to sustain the often strategic, yet opportunistic relationships necessary for political success in Nigeria.

The actor emphasized that while politics is often characterized by manipulation and deceit, the typical Igbo response to betrayal is to cut ties permanently, which may hinder their political careers.

“An Igbo man is not a good politician,” Edochie said. “People involved in politics are accustomed to treachery and can overlook a lot of things. But the Igbo man is not built to tolerate treachery twice. Once you hurt an Igbo man in politics, you lose him forever.”

He added that this inability to forgive betrayal, a trait rooted in Igbo cultural values, often prevents Igbo politicians from maintaining the complex alliances required to thrive in Nigeria’s competitive and cutthroat political landscape.

“Once you show treachery in your dealings with an Igbo man, you’re out. That’s it,” he concluded.
