Real Life in Canada: True Stories from Nigerians Abroad Facing the Hustle 🇨🇦

Leaving Nigeria in search of a better life is a dream shared by many. But what happens after landing in Canada — one of the top destinations for Nigerian immigrants? Beyond the filtered Instagram posts and graduation day smiles, life in Canada comes with its own hustle, wins, and wahala.

We spoke with a few Nigerians across Canada to hear their real stories — unfiltered. Here’s what they had to say:

1. Chidera – From Lagos to Winnipeg: “Minus 30 Degrees, Still Grinding”

Chidera moved from Lagos to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2022 for her master’s in Environmental Science. Coming from a city where 30°C is normal, she was shocked by Canada’s brutal winters.

“The first time I saw -35°C on the weather app, I thought my phone was broken. I almost cried when I walked outside and my nose started hurting immediately.”

But weather aside, Chidera says the education system is organized and work-study programs helped her get her first part-time job at a recycling plant.

“I was working nights, attending lectures during the day, and running a small wig business from my room. It’s tough, but you adapt.”

2. Tunde – Uber Driver in Toronto: “I Have Two Degrees, But This is What Pays the Bills”

Tunde arrived in Canada in 2020 with high hopes. Back in Nigeria, he had a degree in Accounting and five years of work experience. But Canadian employers kept asking for “Canadian experience.”

“No one wanted to hire me for office jobs, so I started driving Uber just to survive. At first, I was ashamed, but it helped me learn the city and meet people.”

Now he’s working on getting certified as a CPA in Canada and still drives part-time to support his family.

“This country humbles you, but it also teaches you patience.”

3. Amaka – International Student in Calgary: “It’s Not All Cruise”

Amaka is pursuing a Nursing diploma in Calgary and also works at a care home. She says international students in Canada are under a lot of pressure.

“Some people back home think once you enter Canada, money will start raining. They don’t see the 12-hour night shifts, the study stress, or the loneliness.”

Still, she remains optimistic and reminds herself why she came.

“When I send money to my younger siblings in Enugu or help my parents pay rent, it feels worth it.”

4. Kunle & Ayo – Husband and Wife in Montreal: “We Started From Scratch Together”

Kunle and Ayo moved to Montreal as newlyweds. With French being the main language, job opportunities were limited at first.

“We didn’t know a single word in French. But we enrolled in free government language classes and slowly started picking it up,” Kunle shares.

Ayo now works as a pharmacy assistant, and Kunle recently landed a tech internship. They say the journey has tested their relationship, but also made it stronger.

“Some months we had to choose between paying rent or buying new clothes. But we thank God for how far we’ve come.”

5. Anonymous – Refugee in Vancouver: “At Least Here, I Sleep Without Fear”

This contributor asked to remain anonymous due to their immigration status. They came to Canada on a visitor visa but later claimed asylum due to religious persecution in Nigeria.

“The system is slow. I’ve been waiting over a year for my hearing, but at least I feel safe. I clean offices at night and volunteer during the day.”

They hope to become a social worker someday to support other immigrants like themselves.

“Canada gave me a second chance. I want to give back.”

The Real Hustle Behind the Dream

Canada is often painted as a land of opportunity — and it is. But that opportunity comes with a price: hard work, sacrifice, culture shock, and often starting over.

Nigerians in Canada are hustling hard: working multiple jobs, studying, sending money home, raising kids, and still trying to make time for joy. The cold weather may chill the bones, but the Naija spirit keeps the fire burning.

Many succeed. Some struggle. But everyone learns. And through it all, our community continues to grow, connect, and thrive.
